How does architecture operate as a security technology? This contribution sets out how reflexive research and urban studies approach built environments political inclusion exclusion instruments. It first presents this role is understood to in the respective scholarly fields, then illustrates its ambivalent operation with two mini-case centering on Bogotá Zürich. In doing so, seeks familiarize readers architecture-oriented analysis, draw main lines of further investigation. Wie funktioniert Architektur als Sicherheitstechnologie? democratic urban streets design guideline codifications (based on qualitative democratic urban spaces design norms)

the concepts of democracy have been around for centuries in different fields of human sciences. however, in most of these fields the idealistic and far-fetched features attributed to democracy have not been manipulated yet. it should be mentioned that there have been only a few serious attempts to find proper go-between elements, which could make such a concept as comprehensible and tangible as...

Applying design ideas to promote security of urban spaces

Security is one of the most critical factors affecting the quality of urban spaces. Nowadays, most of these spaces have become merely pathways with neither social life nor sense of belonging to it. Insufficiency of public surveillance along with weak sense of control and surveillance results in spaces with high crime rate. In the late 60s and early 70s, high crime statistics in open urban space...

Preventive War and Democratic Politics

I define the concept of preventive war, distinguish it from preemption and other sources of better-now-than-later logic, and examine numerous conceptual issues that confound theoretical and empirical analyses of prevention. I then consider the argument that democracies rarely if ever adopt preventive war strategies because such strategies are contrary to the preferences of democratic publics an...
